'Cinderella Ate My Daughter': Are Princesses Bad for Girls' Self-Esteem? - Newsweek

'Cinderella Ate My Daughter': Are Princesses Bad for Girls' Self-Esteem? - Newsweek

Very interesting article. This just magnifies my fears about having a daughter!

I also don't know if I am a "girl" kind of Mom.

Nothing against little girls at all, I just truly don't feel confident in raising a girl.

These fears have to do with my own silly insecurities and they are extremely hard to explain...and probably too deep to get into?

Obviously, if this baby is a girl I will be happy as can be.

I just need to boost up my confidence and raise her the best I know how.

Side note, I am assuming this baby is a boy but no gut feelings at all.

I liked this article Hools. I was actually listening to the radio the other day and they were talking about this. And personally, I couldn't agree more! Whether or not parents force the whole girly princess thing on their daughters, the media does. The toy industry does. You name it. It is thrown in our faces from day one. I seriously believe that little girls are set up for HUGE disappointments in life when they find out that life isn't all about prince charming coming and sweeping them off their feet and living in a castle happily ever after.
Granted, I never forced the whole 'princess' thing on Sadie and she just kind of picked up on it somehow, somewhere, and we just went with it. Over time on her own she decided the princess thing was no longer for her and became a self-declared 'tom boy' which is fine by me. But there's a lot of research that has been done to show that the whole princess epidemic does cause damage long-term.
All you can do is do your part as a parent. When Sadie says "oh that's a girl color or a boy color" or whatever I have always told her there are no Boy colors and Girl colors. And if I had a boy, I'd teach him that it's okay to cry and show emotion when you're hurt or sad. I dunno- rambling but good article. Maybe not 100% accurate but pretty on the money.
